There is no genre called 'Surf Dawg Music' -- but it does exist. It is wedged between surf and folk music, something that a surfer dude on the beach will be playing on his sand encrusted Yamaha acoustic guitar. It is both urban and traditional, throw-back music that just makes you smile. It has flashes of music that could have been played on the deck of a sailing ship in the 1800's, or a pub on he coast of England today. Think Beach Boys' Pet Sounds' -- that is the genesis. Longing for the sea is the undercurrent of this album. Most of this band is made up of surfer folks or coast dwellers, now living in the Desert. The Desert Sea is where we reside now, were the sea is divided -- the sand taking the place of the waves, and the sky is now the ever deep blue. This album was two years in the making, the album 'Three Stories' came first, as the James Luna project was a unique opportunity for the Villains to do something quite different. James appears here as well, as the 'Surf Dawg' vibe was applied to his work. The first track 'Surf Dawg Hymn' was written spontaneously, and performed here as only the Villains could do it. 'Stranded Sailor' is the longing and loss of being by the ocean. Pacific Coast Highway is the drive on Highway 1 on the California Coast with the top down. Captain of the Desert Sea is a sea shanty that also captures the longing of the surf. The Sailors Widow is a wordless lullaby. Black Hearted Women is a tune done almost 20 years ago, finally recorded. Dock of the Bay is our vision of the Otis Redding classic, David Van Druff on vocals. Eye of the Hurricane and Lap of Luxury ore both full guitar orchestra Villain romps. We Got It is a radio friendly version of James Luna's classic, we pumped it up a bit and made it shorter. Delusional Vacation is another full on Villain assault on your folk rock senses. Bluer Wing is a new version with Paul Baker on the fiddle fronting the band. PCH Revisited / Toast for Willie cap the album -- pure surf guitar washes. Enjoy!
