Ode To Al and Chuck - While in college, I had the opportunity to work at a large record company in New York City. Part of the job was to collect the demo albums that were placed outside the offices and throw them away. I picked up a demo album of jazz singer, Al Jarreau. I did not know who he was, but I recognized one of the songs on the album. Instead of throwing it out, I took the album home. When I played the album, I was impressed by his vocal technique and prowess. I have had the opportunity to see him in concert and marvel at his musicianship. The shuffle beat of the drums on this track reminds me of his commercial hits. Chuck Mangione, a jazz flugelhorn player has also been an influence in my musical life. This song is a salute to them. Saturday October Skies - Here in the Northeast, by the middle of October, Mother Nature unleashes gorgeous colors of bright orange and yellow as the leaves turn and fall from the trees in preparation for winter. The air is crisp, the sky a deep blue and it's still warm enough take a walk on the beach or in the park. Candy Carousel - For the longest time, I could not come up with a name for this song. Someone said it reminded them of two lifelong friends taking a walk and ending up at the local playground. There they reminisce about the Merry-Go-Round carousel, the good ol' times and how things used to be. It is good to have one person that we can reminisce and confide in. I hope you have found that person to share Candy Carousel. Latin Music Baby - I have always been a big fan of Latin music; the melodies, energy and syncopated rhythms. For me, when I hear an up-tempo Latin song, I cannot help but move to the music. It really does something to my soul; relaxes and rejuvenates me. I hope it does the same for you. Dance With My Love - Originally I wrote this song as a Bossa Nova; a rhythmic Brazilian song style. When Fred my engineer heard it, he said play it as a ballad and I said 'No way man...this has to be a Latin song!' Fred didn't give in. "Go home and think about it overnight." I went home and played it as a ballad a few times and low and behold I understood what he meant. I hope you grab your girl friend, partner or wife and enjoy this slow dance together. Hey Mike - This song was written for a band teacher in Northport, Long Island. Mike and I would play gigs together; was an excellent player and it was a pleasure to play and 'groove' with him. Mike was diagnosed with cancer and succumbed to a massive infection. I cannot think of a single person who has not been affected by a loved with cancer. September 11th - As a professional musician, I had the opportunity to play at the Windows Of The World restaurant on top of the north tower. On a clear, sunny day, the view was truly an experience that cannot be put into words. For the longest time after the collapse, I was in a 'funk'. It was hard to shake what had happened. In the summer of 2002, I was 'noodling' at the piano and this melody flowed. I immediately felt better and it really lifted my spirits. For the longest time I wanted to publish this melody to help others but I never knew how. I hope this melody helps you. Melody America - I wrote the ending piano arpeggio to this song when I was six years old, on a heavy upright piano that my parents had bought used from the local piano store. When it was delivered I sat down and plunked out the notes. I played them over and over and over again because I did not know how to play anything else since I had not started lessons yet. For years, I did not know how to finish the rest of the song until recently. When we added the tubular bells track, I couldn't help but feel an incredible feeling of patriotism and am truly grateful for the freedom we have in this country. Vermont Snow - After college I had the opportunity to visit Weston, Vermont and found it very calming. I vowed I would visit often in my life. A couple of winters ago, my wife and I spent a long weekend in Weston in a little cabin with no backyard; just pine trees on the mountain that went straight up with at least a foot and a half of snow! I hope you can hear the serenity of the snowfall in the music. Late Nite Food Groove - Before I was married, I worked as a free lance musician often playing clubs until wee hours of the morning. It was not unusual for the band to go for a slice of pizza or a sandwich after we were done playing usually 3 a.m. This went on for many years. During that time, playing a good gig and getting a good meal afterwards were the only things important in life. This song is for the many people working the late night shift; nurses, security guards, office cleaners, the list goes on and on. It's Over - Recently, close friends had announced they were getting a divorce after many years of marriage. For a while, they lived separately in the same house and finally they moved out and the house was sold. It was clear they were not going to get back together. It was tough to understand the break-up. Livin' One Day At A Time - I have always loved Caribbean/Calypso music. It makes me just step back and relax no matter where I am. When I was writing this song, I couldn't help but think about all the conflicts around the world, the unstable economy and families struggling to make ends meet. I was thinking, with all that is happening we need to be "Livin' one day at a time". Live for today and worry about tomorrow.....tomorrow!
