Back in the mid-'90s, just around the time that Jason Miller was getting out of the Air Force, country legend Ralph Stanley had an album out called Saturday Night & Sunday Morning. As the title suggested, the songs were divided up between late-night reverie and early-morning reflection. On Road to ElVado, The J. Miller Band veers more toward the latter. Produced by the Haunted Windchimes' Inaiah Lujan, tracks like 'Waiting on My Time' and 'So Long Corinne' would fit nicely on a mixtape alongside songs by Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt. 'In Spanish, 'el vado' means 'the crossing,' and this whole record to me was really just a representation of my maturity,' says the Colorado Springs singer-songwriter, who recently turned 40. 'It was like, I finally get this now, what makes a good song. And whether it captivates you or not, it captivates me. I'm real selfish about it.' Or generous, depending on how you look at it. Even Miller's most personal lyrics convey universal sentiments. And then there's the title track, an Old West narrative worthy of Texas troubadours Terry Allen and Guy Clark: And the town lay sleeping As the lawmen were creeping She slowly stepped into the light She yelled 'Vaya con Dios El agua mia caballo Now who's the first sumbitch to die?' Bill Forman-Coloroado Springs Independent In the vast wide open fields of Americana, The J.Miller Band is staking their claim! The band consists of Jason Miller (Rhythm Guitar and Vocals), Jason Gilmore (Mandolin and Lead Guitar), Andrew Koken (Bass), and Hans Shopen (Drums). The band can captivate you with their Acoustic Set, or quickly get you up on your feet when they electrify! Miller's songwriting is very genuine! He grew up in Northwest Indiana among the smokestacks of 'Steel Mill Country' and those midwestern small town experiences shine through in his songwriting! His voice runs like an old small block, steady and smooth. Andrew Koken is from right here in Colorado Springs! Andrew has spent years on the Bass and has shared the stage with many of Colorado's premier musicians. Andrew has a technical knowledge of music that makes for a polished rhythm section that commandeer's the band. Hans Schopen made his way back to Colorado Springs after an extended stay on the island of Maui! He is originally from Virginia and moved to Maui at the old age of 14. Hans played in metal bands primarily and that genre really honed his skills. Schopen has wonderful touch and he brings a slightly different musical angle to the band. He can whisper with brushes or stand up the songs with sticks, either way you'll hear some veteran drumming! Jason Gilmore is a multi-instrumentalist who brings a plethora of styles to the table! Gilmore has played in many successful bands along the front range! He hails from Galesburg, Illinois and came to Colorado years ago to immerse himself in music and that dedication has paid off! Gilmore is a solid soloist always on the ready. He is always prepared and has the song's best interest at heart. The J.Miller Band is truly a result of musical friends getting together for one purpose, to sing the songs, play their instruments, and enjoy all the fruits of their labors! Honorary Members: Ben Lewis sits in on Fiddle for string band shows! Ben lives in Manitou Springs and teaches music at the local elementary school. Ben is one of the finest fiddle players in our state and it's an honor to play with him! He released his first solo project in 2011 and it's a wonderful collection of music! Jason Jackson is Miller's right hand man on Acoustic Duo gigs and he will join the band on occasion! Jason sings harmonies for us and helps out on guitar and dobro! Jackson sings and writes music as well and he has officially started his solo career! Look for him playing around town!
