Produkt-Hinweise

In the liner notes to Speak, saxophonist/band leader Fred Hess makes an important point: although the golden era of traveling big bands is long past, the big band format lives on in school ensembles, as well as through individuals such as himself, whose love for this format plows right through all the logistical difficulties. Anyone seeking proof that big bands are flourishing need only listen to this third CD by the Fred Hess Big Band: all six songs are multifaceted gems, delectable panoramas of sound that continue to blossom with subsequent listening. Speak is a tremendous achievement, a gourmet meal of sound concocted by seventeen fine musicians. The Fred Hess Big Band proves that the big band format is still possible, even in the twenty-first century, and still remains as thrilling as ever. Florence Wetzel - allaboutjazz.com SPEAK, the third CD by the Fred Hess Big Band, continues my tribute to the jazz ensemble tradition. Gathered from my fifty years of listening to the inspired efforts of many of the great bands and their composers and arrangers, my music nods to sources as varied as Bill Holman, Steve Lacy, Gene Roland, Bob Berg, Maria Schneider, and, of course, John Coltrane. The inclusion of guest trombonist John Fedchock and the continuing efforts of drummer Matt Wilson made these sessions sparkle with great joy and excitement, as all the soloists stepped forward with wonderful results. Duke Ellington wrote for the individual voices in his orchestra and I try to find ways to tailor my music to the special talents of these players. Aside from John Fedchock and Matt Wilson, I would certainly list all the players in this category, but, to mention only a few, Gary Mayne's rich bass trombone, Ron Miles' unique trumpet conception, and John Gunther, for his superb solo ability, as well as his beautiful lead alto sound. The rock solid bass of Greg Garrison and the outstanding solo flights of trumpeter Al Hood need to be cited, along with the fabulous lead trumpet performance by Pete Olstad, soaring over the ensemble with a sound equal to any of the past great practitioners. I've been blessed to have these musicians perform my music. They rise to the challenge and, surprisingly, seem to be willing to return for more, when I expect I'll never hear from them again. One of the surprises of the present jazz scene is the healthy state of big band music. True, the era of the traveling big band is a thing of the past, but, between college ensembles and quixotic windmill jousters like myself, the amount of recorded music is quite impressive. I hope our efforts will find some sympathetic ears, as everyone's love for this music is clearly heard in this final product.
