These songs are here shared with strong intention to shift the paradigm! In a loving and beautiful way! Your Own Christmas Song is for everyone. With a jazzy feel, it acknowledges that the holidays can be, along with the beauty and togetherness, rife with pressures. And sometimes we don't have our loved ones nearby. Yet we sing, 'Hallelujia Baby, Santa's coming down, to our town, with the love that we've found, and it's all around.' With bass and drums, acoustic guitar, congas, and horn section, this sweet number will fill your holiday playlist with contemporary realness. 'Amidst all this fussing and profiteering, peace in the heart is the cure for the greed and the cruelty, so we all have what we need. . . ' It's a Christmas song that the Occupy movement can embrace! It's real, and it's loving and transcendent. Ancient Starlight Dance was inspired by my reading on an ancient goddess, the Sheela NaGig. She is a crone, a hag, a mystical symbol of wisdom, and to this day, the old carvings of her stand over the threshold of stone caverns in the British Isles and Ireland. On her feast days, people still pass under her carving and touch her yoni as a blessing. Wow. And the song depicts an imagined Winter Solstice ceremony in a real ancient stone goddess culture underground temple, called New Grange, which is in Ireland. The song creates a mood for getting in touch with the seasonal holy days, marking the passing of the solar year, and bringing the goddess culture into our lives. Holy Land is a brand new song from my travels in 2011, noticing that everywhere I go, and everywhere I return to, are all holy lands. I love to connect with the land and the people wherever I go. Some of the images in the song text are from the Sufi tradition, in which the Tavern Master refers to the spiritual teacher; and the Pilgrim or Traveler is the spiritual seeker. As I travel through this world with my music, I relate with intention to build cultural bridges, to represent as a woman from the US with love and intelligence, embracing the people, places, and traditions I meet. 'Build a Bridge . . . This is Holy Land. . . Build a Bridge . . . It's all Holy Land.' Track 4 is a sweet video of me arriving at a radio station in Santa Rosa, California, hearing the frogs croak outside and drinking my homemade kombucha, entering to the DJ world, and sitting down to sing Your Own Christmas Song. My friend Benjamin made both of these videos. Track 5 video documents a live performance of my song Esselen People at Aubergine After Dark in Sebastopol, CA, September 2011, with Al Torre on lead guitar, SaraTone on cajon, Freedom on vocals, and Jahred May on bass! We had a high time that night. The song celebrates indigenous Big Sur people, the Esselen People, as well as the wonderful revolving cast of healers, intellectuals and all-around fabulous humans at the current Esalen Institute, where I was living when I wrote this one. And videographer Benjamin had suggested to me at the time that I include a list of indigenous peoples' names at the end of the song. Give thanks for that insight, and for the beauty and power of speaking the names.
