This recording project began as a gift to my mother and to my husband's mother, each of whom was facing her final illness, although we did not understand that at the time. I felt deep in my heart that those who are weary, grieving, or in pain need to hear words of hope and healing, and need to hear these words again and again. As Paul says far more eloquently than I can, "Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." And so this recording brings together the passages of the Bible that to me are the most filled with hope, joy, and love. Likewise, the readers' voices resound with faith, wonder, and compassion. I chose the King James translation in part because it is more familiar to Christians of our mothers' generation. But the archaic phrases and rolling rhythms of the King James translation also help us to feel these passages as ancient and yet timeless, helping us truly to know that "the Lord's word endureth forever." Beverly Seng December 2011 Dr. Sharon Drake Petro was one of two primary founders of Sojourners United Church of Christ in Charlottesville, Virginia, and she has continued to serve with gladness for many years. In her professional life, Sharon's passion is to help others to fulfill their goals. A psychologist specializing in sports and performance coaching, she coaches athletes, speakers, and business people, helping them to practice effective mental skills, such as perception, confidence, focus, and management of emotions. She has created The WIN Method: Your Guide to Optimal Performance to help individuals to focus on what is relevant to their performance and to screen out deflecting thoughts and feelings. She is Director of Head Coaching Enterprises, and her website is Reverend David Gallup grew up in the Christian church. His mother was an organist and choir director, and his father served as deacon and elder. By the time David was in middle school he knew that full-time Christian ministry would be his life's work. After high school, he served the U.S. Army in Japan as a chaplain's assistant, which brought him heartwarming fellowship with Japanese Christians and an experience of army life quite different from that of his fellow servicemen. Graduating from Oberlin College, David received a teaching fellowship to Madurai, South India. In 1959 he was commissioned as a missionary of the United Church Board for World Ministries. In the Madurai Mission and the Church of South India, he found a dedicated community of educators, doctors, nurses, pastors, and musicians, all creatively sharing the love of God. David served these missions variously as teacher, pastor, and college chaplain, until retiring in 1993. Within that loving community he met and married Padmasani Jotimuttu, one of the first women to be ordained as a pastor of the Church of South India. They have four children and five grandchildren. David and Padmasani continue to teach, sing, and inspire.
